Fig: CMOS VLSI Design ebook |
CMOS VLSI Design by Neil H.E Weste and David Harris teaches the design, layout and fabrication of modern CMOS devices. It contains nice illustration of CMOS layout and chips with pictures that makes it more readable and easier to understand the underlying engineering concept.
As example of some of the chapters and topics covered are- basic configuration of various logic gates such as AND, OR, NAND, exclusive OR and AND gate, their CMOS fabrication process, layout design and stick diagram, design partitioning, MIPS architectures, logic designs, circuit design. Physical planning is another chapter wherein floor planning, standard cells, slice plans and design verifications are explained. It then explains the theory of MOS transistors which includes characteristic curves, non -ideal I-V curves, dc transfer characteristic curves. CMOS processing, principle of operation, layout design principles are explained. Delay and power chapters which are important parameter in the transistor technology are next explained. Circuit characterizations and performance evaluation which are important because this explains how to actually compare and evaluate the designed system are topics covered next. Here it explains interconnects, power dissipation, delay estimations, design margin, reliability and scaling factors. The chapters following this are combinational logic, sequential circuit, datapath subsystem, CMOS memory, array subsystem.
